The city’s greatest treasures are its dagobas constructed of bricks and hemispherical. The most notable of these dagobas are the Ruvanveliseya which dates back to the 2nd Century B.C. and is 300 feet in diameter, the Jetawanarama is 370 feet and the ThuparamaDagoba enshrines the collarbone of the Buddha. The city’s most renowned relic is the sacred Bo Tree, which is said to have grown from a branch of the tree under which the Buddha gained Enlightenment. It was planted 2250 years ago and is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world. Thereafter Proceed to Jaffna via Mannar

The Rail connection is now only up to Vavuniya. The Jaffna peninsula has an area of 380 square miles. Jaffna was important for both the Portuguese and Dutch. Jaffna Fort was completed in 1632 and it covers 55 acres in extent. The Dutch Church inside the Fort dates back to 1706. There are ruins of Portuguese Churches at Myliddi and Chankanai and a ruined Dutch Church at Atchuveli. The Dutch Fort Hammenhiel is at the entrance to the Kayts Harbour and is delightful. Jaffna is full of Hindu Kovils. The NallurKandasamyKovil and VallipuramKovil at Point Pedro are two of the important Kovils. SapumalKumaraya, who ruled the Jaffna kingdom on behalf of the Kottekingdom is credited with either building or renovating the third Nallur Kandaswamy temple Nallur served as the capital of the Jaffna kings, with the royal palace situated very close to the temple. Nallur was built with four entrances with gates. There were two main roadways and four temples at the four gatewaysThe rebuilt temples that exist now do not match their original locations which instead are occupied by churches erected by the Portuguese. The center of the city was Muthirai Santhai (marketplace) and was surrounded by a square fortification around it. There were courtly buildings for the kings, Brahmin priests, soldiers, and other service providers. The old NallurKandaswamy temple functioned as a defensive fort with high walls. In general, the city was laid out like a traditional temple town according to Hindu traditions. CankilianThoppu, the facade of the palace of King Cankili II, can still be found in Nallur. The third temple was destroyed by the Portuguese Catholic colonial Phillippe de Oliveira in 1624 CE.
  • Nagadeepa Raja MahaViharaya: Although the historical stories about Nagadeepa go back centuries, the residents of the island built the current temple in 1944. The stupa looks unusual as it is painted in silver but this is actually to protect it from sea wind. Some parts of ancient ruins found in the area are displayed next to a Buddha statue. There is a concrete slab bearing the legend about Nagadeepa (see textbox). All the structures in the premises are fairly modern but it is still beautiful and peaceful and you can wander around on the sandy ground strewn with seashells. Sri Nagapoosani Amman Kovil: Similar to the Buddhist temple, the Amman Kovil has also been rebuilt and the ancient structures are no more, except for a few monuments. There is a stone inscription from the 12th century CE that shows this had been an ancient port and was the first stop for foreign merchants trying to enter the country. The Amman temple was destroyed by the Portuguese but was rebuilt in 1788. As mentioned earlier, it was again attacked during the war but is now restored The statue of the Nayanair deity kept in the inner sanctum is supposedly ancient and was kept in hiding during the times the temple came under attack. Taking photos inside the temple is not welcome although there were no signs informing visitors about it. However, if you speak to a priest, there is a chance of being permitted to take a few photos without intruding on the worshippers and the ongoing ceremonies.
  • Jaffna Fort: is a fort built by the Portuguese at Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1618 under Philip De Olivera following the Portuguese invasion of Jaffna.
